There are very few instances where I invoke the term ‘hero.’ A bit more than a decade or so, the term was thrown about like candy, diluting its meaning and perverting our perception of normal human beings.
When it comes to fire fighters, however, the term – almost singularly – applies. They make no arrests, shoot no unarmed people, and beat no protesters. They have a single job: help people. If that is not a hero, nothing is (and nothing might be).
