Continued Appeal

This is the inside of the Kansas State Capitol dome in Topeka. We saw that it was free to go up, and so we did. The tour actually leads you up all of the stairs to the outside, where you can wiggle your way around a tiny basket and look at the city.

I made it to exactly where this photo was taken. Sarah stomped her way to the top, but I held back. I knew that I’d not be able to handle the heights. I could have gone a bit higher – probably to the second landing. But once I’d get to the long staircase leading to the tight spiral staircase, it would basically be Jimmy Stewart in Virtigo for me.

So I hung out with an old guy who also stayed behind. It was, he said, too hot for him to continue. It was hot – maybe 100F – so that’s entirely possible. For me, I just know my limitations.

  1. Looks the same as inside the dome of San Francisco’s City Hall. I did make it to the lantern at the top, but I was a bit more “resilient” 35 years ago 🙂 I passed on the “opportunity” to rappel down the face of the dome to the drum below. My interpretation of my role as architect didn’t seem to require such adventures, so I let my roofing consultant and the building manager go ahead!
