When we tried to visit Balancing Rock overlooking Omak Lake on the Coleville Indian Reservation, the road along the south shore of the lake was closed. Unsure of why it was closed (I figured a bridge was out somewhere), we drove only a little way in – just far enough to get a peek at Balancing Rock.
Normally, you are allowed to hike up to the rock itself. Since I wasn’t really sure of where the road was closed, however, I didn’t want to overstay my welcome.
I now see that Omake Lake Road is under some major reconstructing by both the Reservation and State. There doesn’t appear to be any projected date when it will reopen. I’ll likely recheck it this summer.
